An Excerpt from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling

"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense."

  1. I really enjoy the words "mysterious" and "nonsense".
Stating that they were "proud to be perfectly normal" was effective.

  2. The words "strange" and "mysterious" stood out for me. What does it mean to be "perfectly normal"? Does that even exist?

  3. I like how the author placed the word "perfectly" in front of normal to reiterate the Dursley's need to be viewed as ordinary people that don't get involved in nonsense.

  4. "because they just didn't hold with such nonsense." This really shows how little the Dursleys value and tolerate "strange or mysterious" things.

  5. Why are Mr. and Mrs. Dudley so proud of being "perfectly normal" Were they afraid of the strange and mysterious?
